Political Has Gone Digital: Some Facts You Should Know

American flag in code

Political has gone digital.

At Reach Voters our motto is “Political Has Gone Digital”.  We say this because political campaigns began testing the digital waters back in 2008.  Since then there has been a steady increase in the amount of spending campaigns have shifted to digital platforms.

In fact, four years ago, political campaigns spent between 2-3% of the ad budget on digital media.  Today, most political campaigns are spending between 20-40% of their total advertising budget on digital platforms.

According to Forbes (2020) digital ad spending grew by 12% in the 2020 election and was 108% more than in the spending in 2017-2018.

Why the sudden surge in political digital marketing?  Well, because people have been moving to digital platforms as technology continues to grow making it much easier and much quicker to receive information.  In fact:

  • World-wide there are roughly 3.5 billion social media users, roughly 45% of the total population (Emarsys, 2019)
  • Nearly 68% of U.S. adults report they are Facebook users (Pewinternet, 2018)
  • According to Emarketer (2019), 90.4% of Millennials, 77.5% of Gen X, and 48.2% of Baby Boomers are active on social media
  • Pew Research (2021) found that 86% of U.S. adults say they get their news from smartphones, tablets, or computers. And roughly 52% prefer to get their news from digital platforms.

Clearly more people are turning to digital media for their information.  Doesn’t it make sense then to focus your campaign where your voters are?

In today’s climate, successful political campaign almost always necessitates digital strategy.

More importantly, this trend does not seem to be reversing course any time soon.  Which is why you need a digital marketing company who not only has the technical expertise to deliver a targeted message, but understands political strategy and how to craft a message design to reach voters.
